    Final Fantasy XV: Break it to the limit with fresh, flamboyant fisticuffs

    Sprawling worlds and grandiose stories wrapped in lush visuals are all part and parcel of the Final Fantasy experience, but the newest series entry is looking to take things even further with a more involved battle system to match.

    While fans of traditional turn-based fighting may weep at the thought, a closer look at what we can expect from Noctis and co in the fisticuffs department has got us more excited than a moogle with a freshly blow-dried pom-pom. The new info comes courtesty of game director Hajime Tabata, who’s spilled a couple of tasty info beans.

    First up is the ability to parry incoming blows to counter with one of your own. instead of just taking a strike on the chin and bleeding hit points, you’ll be able to avoid damage and open up new attack opportunities by timing your guard and pushing back at just the right moment. Of course you could simply attempt to dodge out of the way instead, but where’s the fun in that? You can’t have risk/reward without the first part.

    Noctis can teleport himself straight into the thick of things to quickly close the gap between you and any nasties, or warp straight up and above it all to get a new perspective. You can also fall back to cover, and while you won’t be ducking down to avoid bullets in the more traditional cover-system sense, the respite will give you the opportunity to recover your strength before getting back to the business of cutting up imperial troops.

    While you might not be able to play as one of your boyband bros, they’ll still be there to provide support with co-operative special attacks as well as get on with their own fighting in the background. if your friends just aren’t cutting the mustard, though, you can always summon in help in the form of a skyscraper-sized titan, for one. it’s all looking very much like Type-0’s brand of battle, and if that’s anything to go by then FFXV stands to be both an epic rpG and an excellent action game in its own right. And with a planned worldwide release date, we won’t have to look to Japan with jealous eyes this time.
